Student Nurse Bursaries

01. Bursary Scheme for Adelaide School of Nursing entrants.
The Adelaide Health Foundation, in conjunction with Trinity College, Dublin and the CAO, participates in the selection of student nurses and we offer financial support to students to ensure that finance is not a barrier to taking up a place in nurse education in Tallaght University Hospital.
The Foundation offers bursaries to students whose financial means merits support. Bursaries of varying amounts are awarded based on need.
These bursaries may be granted to Nursing students in Tallaght University Hospital for three years but must be reapplied for annually. The awarding of a bursary is solely within the discretion of the Foundation and will be given to the most deserving applicants each year. All personal details will be kept strictly confidential.
02. Bursary Scheme for 1st, 2nd & 3rd Year Student Nurses of Tallaght University Hospital
The Adelaide Health Foundation, Student Nurse Bursary Scheme is open to student nurses attached to Tallaght University Hospital who are undertaking the General Nursing Degrees (TR091 and TR093).
1st, 2nd and 3rd Year Nurse Students are eligible to apply.
The Bursary must be re-applied for every year
Note: Mature Student Bursary is non-reckonable income for SUSI
Eligibility for a bursary
- Must be registered student at Trinity College Dublin.
- Must be attached to Tallaght University Hospital
- 1st, 2nd and 3rd Year Nurse Students are eligible to apply.
Basis for Assessment & Income limits for eligibility
- The income of the applicant’s parents or guardians will be assessed in the case of applicants applying as school leavers between the ages of 17 and 23 years on or before 1 January of the year of entry
- The income of the applicant’s parents or guardians will be assessed in the case of applicants applying as mature applicants but are dependant on parents.
- The mature applicant’s own income will be assessed in the case of applicants who are living independently.
- The income limits which determine eligibility for a bursary will in general be similar to those in operation in the Government education grants scheme but each case is considered on its own merits.
- The assessment will be made on the income for the year previous to the year of entry.
- The Bursary must be re-applied for every year
Scholarships - Introduction
The Adelaide Health Foundation is committed to supporting nurses in Tallaght University Hospital in respect of their professional development and in respect of the contribution to the development of nursing practice in the Hospital.
It has, therefore, developed an annual programme of Nursing Scholarships.
The scholarship is open to nurses in Tallaght University Hospital and nurse lecturers in the School of Nursing & Midwifery Studies, Trinity College; Dublin.
The Hannah McDowall Nursing Scholarship
This Scholarship is awarded to the student nurse who achieves the highest mark at distinction level in the first year annual examinations conducted by Trinity College, Dublin. The Scholarship, valued €2000, is to promote excellence in nursing studies is open to all nursing students attached to Tallaght Hospital. It is named in honour of the late Staff Nurse Hannah McDowall (1976-2001).
The Eileen Mansfield Scholarship.
The Foundation funds one Scholarship or Scholarships to the value of €5,000 (or such other sum as the Board of the Adelaide Health Foundation shall determine) per annum. The scholarship is open to any qualified nurse on the staff of the Hospital and nurse lecturers in the School of Nursing & Midwifery in TCD.
Objectives of the Mansfield Scholarship
- To contribute to the development of nursing practice and patient care in the Hospital and/or associated community services.
- To assist in the undertaking of a course or programme at a third level institution and/or a defined research project in the Hospital.
- To assist in the promotion of post-graduate nursing education, development and research.
The Caroline Sharkey Scholarship
The Caroline Sharkey Award is awarded to the 4th Year Intern nurse who has displayed excellence in compassionate care at ward level.
Mr Sharkey founded the Award in memory of his late wife, in grateful appreciation of the kindness shown to her by nursing staff in the hospital. This award highlights the importance of listening, empathy and respect in nursing care.
This Scholarship carries a value of €3,000 per annum.
The Dorothy and David Mitchell Scholarship.
This Scholarship carries a value of €3000 (or such other sums as the Board of the Adelaide Health Foundation shall determine) per annum and is open to any registered nurse on the staff of the Hospital.
Objectives of the Scholarship.
- (a) To develop nursing practice within the Hospital through evidence based practice.
- (b) To support projects by nurses this would improve the quality of patient care and be of benefit to nurses in their practice.
